Q Metacognitive Reading Introduction and Reflection Again a warm welcome to class. For our opening week of class, we will be developing our reading skills, in addition to getting an introduction to the class discussion board. You might be saying, "Mr. W, I already know how to read." Yes, I am aware that you can, but I am more interested in helping you develop and strengthen your skills so you always have some tools that allow you to tackle texts of varying complexity. In short, my goal is to help you expand not only your reading skills with texts and content you may be familiar with, but also with topics and ideas and readings you have no idea about. Quality reading skills will help you find a foothold in a text and allow you to build comprehension and understanding. INTRODUCTION: WHAT IS METACOGNITION? This is where our focus on metacognitive reading comes in. Metacognition is the "awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes" (thanks, Google), so metacognitive reading, then, is the awareness and understanding of one's thinking processes while reading. What is the importance of this? Well, if we are aware of how we read and how to use our "reading tools" like picturing, predicting, etc. (we'll cover these), then we are able to navigate the many challenges readings throw at us. As such, we will be reflecting on our reading habits, in addition to thinking about what habits successful readers utilize. REFLECTION: METACOGNITIVE READING: Now that we know what metacognitive reading is, we need to do some reflection on our reading habits. So, for this assignment, you will need to provide short answers for the following: -What do you read? Why? -What does someone have to do to be a good reader? -How do you change your reading habits when reading different texts like stories, articles, and textbooks, if at all? -What reading strategies do you use, if any? -What do you find rewarding about reading? Why? What do you find challenging about reading? Why? *Note: You will not be able to edit the post after you submit it. The assignment will be due by 11:59 p.m., Sunday, 6/26. Once you finish this assignment, you will be done with the first week's module.

-What do you read? Why? I read non-fiction books: business, philosophy, self-improvement, etc. These types of books allow me to gain new perspectives and expand my thinking about topics on which I may have a surface perspective. -What does someone have to do to be a good reader? To be a good reader, I think one must first be attentive, be open, ask questions, and have a desire to understand. It is not unlike being a good moviegoer. If someone asks, "how was the movie?" and gets the reply, "it was good" they were probably not asking a good moviegoer.
